The Los Altos Golf & Country Club can trace its beauty and beginnings to the 1800’s, when Governor Alvarado helped found Rancho San Antonio, a square league of land in the Santa Clara Valley. The University of Santa Clara purchased 700 acres from that original plot as a new site for its college.

The plans were scrapped and the property was offered for sale in 1902.

The Club's Articles of Incorporation are dated October 29, 1923 and its bylaws were officially adopted on November 19, 1923. The founding group led by President Charles A. Gray bought the land from the University of Santa Clara soon thereafter, setting aside 155 acres for Club use and subdividing the rest for homes. Tom Nicolls, was the club’s first golf pro and chief architect of the Club's facilities.

Work on the course began in September, 1924 and was completed in May, 1925.

From 1923 to 1931 five presidents guided the Club’s growth. Mr. C. H Segur served as President for the next eight years and oversaw a surge of progress, including the addition of a swimming pool and tennis courts.

The war in 1942 had a dismal effect on the club. Membership dropped to a staggering 28, its lowest level and debt to a bank, surged. To pay off its loans, a portion of the golf course was sold, reducing it to 9-holes. Fortunately, stalwart members came forward and saved LAGCC from disaster by loaning the club money and volunteering to work the grounds and facilities themselves. After the war, things began to pick up and membership increased consistently year-over-year until it reached its present closed membership of 425.

In 1959, Dr. Lee Shahinian became President and over the next 12 years made improvements to the Club that helped make LAGCC become one of the most scenic, stunning golf courses in Northern California. He planted 1,000 Redwoods by hand, bordering the 9th and 18th holes and added another 500 other varieties throughout the course. He dug the lakes at holes 9 and 18, developed our sprinkler and irrigation systems and fenced our golf course.

In 1965, Lee developed our first tennis courts and created our Social Membership program, giving Los Altos Golf and Country Club a fine tennis facility and a very active Social Membership.

The 18 hole, par 71 course underwent a complete renovation in 2004. While retaining all of its old charm and challenges, the course gained a dramatic improvement in drainage with the addition of rye grass fairways and bent grass greens, which allows our members to play within a day of a heavy rain.

In October, 2010, the Membership approved a Clubhouse Renovation Plan. The completed project now delivers significant enhancements to the member experience while preserving the unique character of the club. Members now enjoy an expanded Grill with the addition of our new Wine Cellar and outdoor fire pits. Our new locker rooms, complete with steam, sauna and whirlpool amenities and private lounges for both men and women are exceptional. A 3,400 square foot coed state-of-the-art Fitness facility is an exciting addition for members and a redesigned and upgraded kitchen ensures our exceptional food service. Our beautiful new Sequoia Room is perfect for large events with a private bar and patio for member and member sponsored events. It is with excitement and enthusiasm that we embrace this next chapter in our Club history.
